History[edit | edit source]
Although there are traces of the Taino people (indigenous people of the Caribbean) there is no specific group of settlers prior to the Spanish colonization around the year 1579. The Anusim, Maranos, and other Sephardic Jews settled in the area.
Adjuntas was officially recognized and founded in 1815. Many immigrants from the Mediterranean island of Corsica and Majorca and African slaves later inhabited the area. Many of these groups established coffee plantations in the mid 19th century.
After 1894, the United States Army occupied the town during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Seventeen Barrios currently make up the municipality of Adjuntas.
September 20th, 2017 saw Hurricane Maria with its corresponding high rainfall and numerous landslides.
Adjuntas currently has a population of 19,483.
