British Colonization (1770-1901)[edit | edit source]
In 1770, the British sailed along and mapped the east coast of Australia, which they named New South Wales and claimed the area for Great Britain. [1] On 1 January 1901, the Constitution of Australia came into force, and the six separate British self-governing colonies became the states of the Commonwealth of Australia. [2]
