Historical Background[edit | edit source]

From the mid-nineteenth century, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were administered by British Governors in Ceylon or Singapore. The islands became an Australian Territory 23 November 1955.[1]

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island are part of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories since 1995. This is an administrative unit under the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development. Each has its own Shire Council: the Shire of Christmas Island and the Shire of Cocos.[2]
