Bristol City was in independent county, by itself, bordering partly in Somerset and partly in Gloucestershire (pre-1898).

Here is as complete a list of pre-1851 parishes and chapels (about 60) found in Bristol City (as of 1890) as can be determined. The year next to each parish is when parish registers began in that parish.

Parishes lying just outside of, or contiguous to Bristol City and yet parts of each one of them were officially recognized as being in Bristol City's civil boundary, included the following in pre-1851:
