Province Information[edit | edit source]

Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, covering an area of 3,358.6 km2 (1,296.8 sq mi). It is located in northern Vietnam. Throughout history, Hanoi had ben known as many other names including:

  • Long Biên (龍邊, "dragon edge")
  • Tống Bình (宋平, "Song peace")
  • Long Đỗ (龍肚, "dragon belly")
  • Đại La (大羅, "big net")
  • La Thành (羅城, "net citadel")
  • Thăng Long (昇龍, "rising dragon")
  • Đông Đô (東都, "eastern metropolis") during the Hồ dynasty,
  • Đông Quan (東關, "eastern gate") during the Minh dynasty
  • Đông Kinh (東京, "eastern capital") during the Lê dynasty
  • Bắc Thành (北城, "northern citadel")
  • And finally Hà Nội (河內, "inside the rivers") in 1831 until today
