Brief History[edit | edit source]

Harwick was chartered on August 19, 1781 by the Vermont Legislature. The first town meeting was held in 1794 and the town was organized in 1795.  The town contains the incorporated village of Hardwick and the unincorporated villages of East Hardwick and Mackville.

During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered construction of the Bayley-Hazen Military Road to provide access into the interior of Vermont. It would prompt the development and settlement of Hardwick and East Hardwick. [1] [2] [3] [4]
