Categories[edit | edit source]
It is policy to place all articles in FamilySearch Wiki into at least one category.
What is a "Category?"[edit | edit source]
Categories work much like indexes. They are for grouping articles under similar subjects, localities, or topics. Categories (along with other features like cross-references, lists, and infoboxes) help users find information, even if they don't know that the information exists or what it's called. For more information on Categories, click here.
How to place a page into a category[edit | edit source]
- Categories are internal links and use the same double square brackets.
- They are placed at the bottom of the page.
- The Wikitext coding is:
- NOTICE the double square brackets.
- NOTICE the required word "Category" and the colon.
Use an existing category rather than invent a new one[edit | edit source]
There are literally thousands of categories in the FamilySearch Wiki. Use the category given in your project instructions or check this list of existing categories to use. If you can't find one that seems to fit, please contact others for help. Please DO NOT CREATE A NEW CATEGORY unless you are given permission to do so.
