Description[edit | edit source]

The County was named for its rolling terrain. The County has Hillsdale as its seat and the County was created 1835. The County is located in the south-central area of the state.[1]

1829--Hillsdale County was created 29 October 1829 from unorganized territory.  It was attached to Lenawee County prior to organization 11 February 1835. County seat: Hillsdale [4]

Land and property records can place an ancestor in a particular location, provide economic information, and reveal family relationships. Land records include: deeds, abstracts and indexes, mortgages, leases, grants and land patents.

In most counties in Michigan, probate records have been kept by the county judge. They include wills, fee books, claim registers, legacy records, inheritance records, probate packets, and dockets. The records are available at the county courthouse.
