The vast majority of your genealogical research for Sweden will be in church records that are available online. You do not have to be fluent in Swedish to read these records because they often used key words in the records. In the Wiki, methods for locating and reading church records are given specifically for each county.

Click on the map or list below to find detailed instructions and online collections for the county where your ancestors lived. Click here if you don't know which county to choose.

Knowing Your Locality[edit | edit source]

To search effectively, it will help if you know the farm, parish, and county where your ancestor lived.

  • The Wiki articles Gather Family Information, Tracing Immigrant Origins, and Finding a Place of Origin in Sweden describe many strategies you can use to find your ancestor's place of origin.
  • Search for the record of your ancestor leaving Sweden:1783-1991 - Sweden, Emigrants Registered in Church Books, 1783-1991 at Ancestry - index and images. ($)
  • Sweden 1951 Place Names Register and the Swedish Parish Pages list in this Wiki will give you searchable lists of places, particularly parishes, the farms within those parishes, and the county where the parish was located.
  • If you know your ancestor's exact birth date and parents' names, try finding the birth in one of these nationwide indexes. Because of the high duplication rate of Swedish names, be very careful when choosing an entry in these collections. You should follow up in Communion Records to make sure the child grew to adulthood; in Marriage Records to make sure the child grew up to marry the correct wife; and in Birth Records to make sure the child really became the parent of your ancestor in the next generation.
