What is in This Collection?[edit | edit source]

This collection includes Jasper County, Iowa, land records from 1855 to 1911. The documents include Land Patents, Referees Deeds, Tax Deeds, and Warranty Deeds.

Additional land records from Jasper County are available on microfilm at the Family History Library and through family history centers. Please check the Family History Library Catalog for information about the records.

What Can These Records Tell Me?[edit | edit source]

These records can identify owners of land, sellers and buyers, and the amount land was sold for. You can even learn who was the President of the United States when the land patent was filed. Land Patents: these documents request deeds for land. These images can include:

  • Date/time filed
  • County and state
  • Applicant’s name and residence
  • Land location and description
  • Who the President of the United States is at date of application

Referees Deeds: These images can include:

  • Date/time filed
  • County and state
  • Seller and purchaser names and residences
  • Land location and description
  • Land sale price
  • Type of sale (auction, etc.)

Tax Deeds: These images can include:

  • Date/time filed
  • County and state
  • Land location and description
  • Land tax amount

Warranty Deeds: These are land deeds from sellers to buyers. These images can include:

  • Names of sellers and buyers
  • Date/time filed
  • County/state of land sale
  • Land sale price
  • Land location and description
  • Date of sale

Compare each result from your search with what you know to determine if there is a match. This may require viewing multiple records or images. Keep track of your research in a research log.

  • Search for vital records such as birth, marriage and death

I Can't Find the Person I'm Looking For, What Now?[edit | edit source]

  • If your ancestor does not have a common name, collect entries for every person who has the same surname. This list can help you find possible relatives
  • If you cannot locate your ancestor in the locality in which you believe they lived, then try searching records of a nearby town or county
  • Try different spellings of your ancestor’s name
  • Remember that sometimes individuals went by nicknames or alternated between using first and middle names, or even initials
