Johor is a state located in the south of the Malay Peninsula, with population of 3,700,000. It is also known by its Arabic honorific, دارالتّعظيم (Darul Ta'zim), meaning "Abode of Dignity". Johor Bahru is the state capitol city. The head of state is the Sultan of Johor, while the head of government is the Menteri Besar. The hereditary position of sultan can only be held by a member of the Johor Royal Family. Islam is the state religion per the 1895 Constitution of Johor.
The total land area of Johor is nearly 19,166 square kilometers (7,400 square miles). The state has a total of 400 kilometers (250 miles) of coastline. Much of central Johor is covered with forest, with an extensive network of rivers.
Johor's culture has been influenced by different ethnicities throughout history, especially by the Arabs, Bugis and Javanese people, with the state also becoming a mixture of different cultures among the Chinese, Indian, Malay and aboriginal people.[1]
