English is widely used in business, as well as Chinese dialects, Tamil, and local indigenous languages. Records were kept in Malay, English, Dutch, Portuguese and Chinese.
In Brunei the official language is Bahasa Melayu Brunei, which is very similar to the language spoken by Malays in Malaysia and Indonesia. English is also widely used as well as the Chinese and Indian dialects mentioned above.
