Mecklenburg County is located in the South-Central portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia and shares a border with North Carolina. Mecklenburg County was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III[1].

African American[edit | edit source]
In 1860, Mecklenburg County had one of the largest enslaved populations in the state (12,420 individuals). Ten years later in 1870, it had one of the largest African American populations in Virginia (14,156).[8]
