History[edit | edit source]
Fort Maurepas on the Biloxi Bay was built by the French on Biloxi Bay in 1699. In 1763, land east of the Mississippi was ceded to Great Britain and was administered with British West Florida. Area west of the Mississippi River was ceded to Spain that same year. The coastal areas of Mississippi were ceded from Spain to Britain in 1783. Until 1795, the rest of Mississippi was claimed by Georgia. The Mississippi Territory was formed in 1798, and the Spanish troops left the fort at Nogales (Vicksburg). In 1812, the United States obtained the coastal areas of Mississippi from Spain. [1]
