Sumatra consists of a large northwestern belt of the island North of Sumatra. It covers an area of 72,981.23 km2 (28,178.21 sq mile). Its capital is Medan. North Sumatra is a multi-ethnic province. Ethnic groups in North Sumatra can be grouped as follow:
