Salem is an extinct town, now a township in the East Central Franklin townships. In 1823 it was organized as a town from Freeman, Mount Abram, and Phillips going by the name of North Salem; but the name was changed to simply Salem in 1834. Salem surrendered its town organization in 1945.[1] [2]
