On Oct. 12, 1761, New Hampshire Gov. Benning Wentworth granted a charter to a new town in the New Hampshire Grants to be known as Pitt's Ford, later changed to Pittsford. The first settlers arrived in 1769 and by 1775, about 200 people lived in the town.
Since the 1980’s, farming has declined and forests are reclaiming pastures as Pittsford has become a bedroom community with 70% of the working population employed outside of the town.<ref>History Rutland County Vermont, Edited by H.
