Spain Colonization (1624-1811)[edit | edit source]
The first Spanish permanent settlement on the territory of present-day Uruguay was founded in 1624. War against Spanish rule began in early 1811 and the Spanish were defeated on 18 May 1811. [1]

Portugal Colonization (1680-1811)[edit | edit source]
The Portuguese established their first settlement in present-day Uruguay across from Buenos Aires in 1680. British pressure forced the Portuguese to withdraw from Uruguay in late 1811. [2]
