Ohio Births Before 1867[edit | edit source]

Limited Records Available[edit | edit source]

Although Ohio became a state in 1803, recording births were not required by the county until 1867. Only a few counties recorded births and often they incomplete for all years. You can try the databases below but often birth information must be found using substitute records, such as death and church records.

Before using birth records know:[edit | edit source]

  • Name of the individual
  • Year/approximate year of the birth
  • Place of birth

Search these Incomplete Databases[edit | edit source]

Births were not required to be kept by the county until 1867. However, a few counties sporadically gathered birth information before 1867. If you do not find a birth entry here, try substitute records, such as death and church records.

Can't find your ancestor's birth record?[edit | edit source]

Next Steps[edit | edit source]

  • Compare any new information in the record with what was known before to be sure details are consistent.
  • Look for birth/christening information for the siblings.
  • Find the marriages of the parents.
