Finding the Luxembourg Place of Origin

Knowing the place of origin (city, town, or parish) in Luxembourg is essential in finding the desired ancestor. Although some nation-wide indexes exist, most records can only be accessed on the local level. Try the following suggestions:

  • Survey previous research of the ancestor and their family (including parents, siblings, spouses, children).
  • Search records in country of arrival. Some useful records include:
  • Biographies
  • Birth, marriage, death certificates
  • Cemetery records
  • Census records
  • Church records
  • Citizenship papers
  • Funeral cards
  • Genealogies
  • Journals
  • Land and property
  • Letters
  • Military records
  • Naturalization records
  • Newspapers
  • Obituaries
  • Passenger lists
  • Passport Applications
  • Photographs
  • Probate records
  • Look at gazetteers for the proper town name. Because of the proximity of France, Germany, and Belgium, town names may be written in the French, German, or Belgian variation.
