What are the common elements on a Wiki page?[edit | edit source]

While there are upwards of 94,000 pages in the Research Wiki, each page contributes a different experience for the researcher. That being said, every page in the Wiki has four sections in common.

These sections are: (refer to the blocked-off areas pictured in this image of the Research Wiki HOME page).

  • FamilySearch Tabs: located on the top left corner of the page.
  • Research Wiki Sidebar: a gray area located on the left side of the page.
  • User-specific Links: located on the top right corner of the page, below the SIGN IN/SIGN OUT button.
  • Page-specific Tabs: located just below the User-specific links.


We will briefly review the components of each section.

FamilySearch Tabs[edit | edit source]

  • Family Tree: Offers FamilySearch users access to a free family tree template to add individuals and to connect them into family units.
  • Search: Allows a user to search for records, images, catalogs, books, etc. and access the Research Wiki pages.
  • Memories: Offers users the opportunity to add pictures of individuals and legal documents and to build family or individual stories.
  • Indexing: Lists projects that helps contributors make records searchable online.
  • Activities: Provides in-home and online activities to encourage family members to engage in their family histories.
  • Temple: Offers opportunities to identify individuals ready for temple ordinances.

  • Wiki Home - Links to the Wiki HOME page.
  • About the Wiki - Overview of the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
  • Online Genealogy Records - A page listing links links to online records for different states, provinces, or countries.
  • Guided Research - A step-by-step process to find record links in the Wiki.
  • Research Resources - List of various genealogy research resources for patrons.

Centers/Libraries[edit | edit source]

  • Family History Library - Links to information on the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
  • Family History Centers - How to get help from a Family History Center and how to find one near you.
  • FS Affiliate Libraries - List of genealogical libraries in the United States and the United Kingdom that have privileges to limited-access FamilySearch databases.

Give Feedback[edit | edit source]

  • Submit Wiki Content - How to make suggestions for edits or for new material if you do not want to edit yourself.
  • Report a Problem - Allows patrons to report problems with the Wiki to FamilySearch.
  • Contact Us - Allows patrons to offer suggestions or ask questions concerning the Wiki.

Edit the Wiki[edit | edit source]

  • Become an Editor - How to Edit the Wiki.
  • Upload File/Image - Allows users without the proper rights to upload files and image for approval.
  • Personal Sandbox - Links to your personal main sandbox page.
  • Wiki Projects - How to help FamilySearch Wiki:do projects.
  • Wiki University - Link to lessons on Wikitext, HTML, and Visual Editor.

Tools[edit | edit source]

  • What links here - List of pages that link to the page you are on.
  • Related changes - List of pages that have been edited and are linked to specific pages that you are watching.
  • Upload file - Link for 'authorized' Wiki users to upload images.
  • Special pages - List of reports and various controls, some of which require special user rights to access.
  • Printable version - Creates a version of the page that is printer friendly.
  • Permanent link - Link that will take you to the last edit to this page.
  • Page information - Detailed statistical information about the page.

User Links[edit | edit source]

Immediately below the FamilySearch Login/Logout button is a row of User-specific links:

The following is a description of these links:

  • Your User Name: Your FamilySearch user name will appear here after you have logged in. Clicking on this link takes you to your profile page (User:yourusername), if you created one.
  • Tab2.2.PNG: Clicking on this icon will show a list of alerts addressed to you.
  • Tab2.3.PNG: Clicking on this icon will show a list of notices for your review.
  • Talk: Clicking on "Talk" will show you all past messages sent to you by others.
  • Sandbox: Clicking on "Sandbox" will take you to your sandbox home page (User:yourusername/sandbox) and should display a table of contents of all your sandboxes.
  • Preferences: Clicking on "Preferences" will bring up a page where you can chose how you want pages to display on your monitor and others preferences you may want in place. Study this page carefully as there is a lot of material to consider. Get help from Wiki leaders if you have questions.
  • Watchlist: Clicking on "Watchlist" will show a list of all pages you are watching to keep track of any changes others may make to them.
  • Contributions: Clicking on "Contributions" will show a list of all contributions you have made to the wiki over time.

Below the row of User-specific links is a row of page-specific tabs:

The following is a description of these tabs:

  • Page: This tab is white when on any page. If you are on a help page the words "Help page" appear in this tab instead of "Page."
  • Talk: This is where comments about the page are entered. If comments have been made in the past, the word "Talk" is blue, else "Talk" is in red.
  • Read: Like the "Page" tab, this tab is white when on any page. If on another tab, you can click on this tab and it will take you to the page itself.
  • Edit: This tab takes you to the Visual Editor.
  • Edit source: This tab takes you to the Wikitext Editor.
  • View history: You will see a list of edits made to this page.
  • Star: This little star is normally white. By clicking on this star a "watch" is placed on the page and it turns blue. If anyone makes a change, you will be notified.
  • More: Clicking on the arrow causes a drop down menu to appear.
- Delete - If you have rights, you can delete the page.
- Move - Use to change the name of the page.
- Protect - To protect the page and keep others from making changes.
- Refresh - To refresh the page.
  • Search FamilySearch Wiki: Enter a topic or subject into this box to search for pages containing more information. Go to Advanced Searches for additional searching techniques in Wiki.

Anatomy of an Article[edit | edit source]

Wiki "Location" articles are also standardized with a consistent "look". Please review this "labeled map" to see the various parts and common placement of "article components" on a county page.
