Contributor Lessons
My personal space[edit | edit source]
As a new contributor to the Wiki, we invite you to create and use the following pages for yourself:
- User: a page to create a personal profile or introduction of yourself as a FamilySearch Research Wiki contributor.
- User talk: a page to ask questions and receive help from the Research Wiki Support staff.
- A special Sandbox: a page that contains an easily accessible table of contents of all your sandbox pages.
- Sandbox workareas: pages you can create as workareas for your projects.
- The sections below will provide instructions on HOW TO CREATE each of these types of pages. |
The USER page[edit | edit source]
- login to the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
- in the Wiki search box (top right hand corner) enter the following: User:yourusername, then click enter.
- - NOTE: change "yourusername" to your "FamilySearch login name".
- press the [Create source] tab to create a new page.
- add information to introduce yourself.
- scroll down and type "Created my USER profile page" into the [Summary] box.
- click on the [Save changes] button to save your User page.
The User talk page[edit | edit source]
- login to the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
- go to your newly created User page, then press the [Talk] tab.
- add a new topic by pressing the link [Start a new talk topic] or by pressing the [Add topic] tab.
- enter your question or comments, then click on [Save changes] to save the page.
- This is the page you can create if you need specific help. The Wiki support team will respond to the messages you post here. |
A Special Sandbox[edit | edit source]
- login to the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
- in the Wiki search box, enter the following: User:yourusername/Sandbox, then click enter.
- - NOTE: change "yourusername" to your "FamilySearch login name".
- click on the [Create source] button.
- copy and paste this code {{Special:PrefixIndex/User:yourusername}} onto the first line of the coding box.
- - NOTE: change "yourusername" to your "FamilySearch login name".
- copy and paste this code [[Category:Sandbox]] onto the second line of the coding box.
- scroll down and type "Created my HOME sandbox page" into the [Summary] box.
- click on [Save changes] to save your page.
- You can quickly access your "table of contents" by clicking on the link named "Sandbox" found on the top right hand corner of your page below the ?Help button. |
Sandbox Workareas[edit | edit source]
- login to the FamilySearch Research Wiki.
- in the Wiki search box, enter the following: User:yourusername/Sandbox/workareaname, then click enter.
- - NOTE: change "yourusername" to your "FamilySearch login name".
- - NOTE: the "workareaname" can be any short, descriptive name YOU choose to use.
- if you are editing using Visual Editor, click on the [Create] button; if you are a Wikitext Editor, click on the [Create source] button.
- add the new information you desire.
- add a category named Sandbox to the bottom of the page (after your newly added information).
- add a [Summary] describing changes made to your sandbox, then [Save] your page.
- You can create as many workarea sandboxes as you desire as long as they contain a different "workareaname". |
