French Colonization (1837-today)[edit | edit source]
The French were the first Europeans to settle in 1837. In 1888, a treaty was signed to establish a French protectorate under the authority of the French Colony of New Caledonia. Wallis and Futuna became a separate French overseas territory on 29 July 1961. [1]
