Quick History[edit | edit source]

Located in the southwest quadrant of Cache Valley (Cache County, Utah) Wellsville (Latitude: 111.9 degrees West 41.6 degrees North) was settled in 1856 by a group of approximately six Latter-day Saint families (group reported at twenty-five individuals) who officially started the settlement on 15 September of that year.  This group entered the valley via Sardine Canyon to the south under a directive from Brigham Young, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The early and cold winter of 1856 encouraged these early settlers to quickly build cabins and secure as much foodstuffs for themselves and their animals as possible. The settlers organized a school district a year later in 1857.  In 1860 the population was reported at 574 and by the mid 1860's the villiage had grown sufficiently that in 1866 the town was officially incorporated.  In the years following the village soon developed into a successful rural farming town- complete with dams, irrigation canals and ditches.  Wellsville was connected to the growing railroad system about 1905 and electricity arrived in 1909.  By the 1950's the population of the town was 1241  officially and had an elementary school, a junior high, several auto service facilities, a drug store, a confectionary, a lumber yard, a 'glass' house, a grain handling facility, two wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, etc.  In 1990 the population was 2206 and by 2008 it had grown to over 3200.  Although the town has fewer business enterprises now than earlier as of the mid 1980's it still supported a grocery store, a gas station, beauty salons, a post office, a welding shop, a hardware store, a dentist, a cafe and assorted other business endeavors.  The reader is directed to a) Website: Utah Historical Encyclopedia {Upkeep by Media Solutions, University of Utah, 101 So.
