Parish History[edit | edit source]

WOOLWICH (St. Mary Magdalene), a market town and parish, in the union of Greenwich, hundred of Blackheath, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, W division of Kent, 8 miles E by S from London. [1]

Woolwich St Mary is an Ancient Parish historically in North West Kent and within the Greater London boundary. Woolwich remained part of Kent until 1889 when the County of London was created Woolwich Wikipedia

It is also known as the church of St Mary Magdalene [and was established by at least the year 1670, and re-built in 1727 by an unknown architect and Deptford builder Matthew Spray. The church has been designated a grade II* listed building by English Heritage Listed Building

Within this Ancient Parish were formed:

  • Holy Trinity: Rope Walk / Beresford Square. see List of Commissioners Churches in London Wikipedia Built 1833 as Trinity Episcopal Chapel; chapel of ease 1850, closed 1960 & demolished 1962; parish created 1881 from Woolwich St. Mary, abolished 1953.
  • St John the Evangelist: Wellington St. built 1845, demolished 1948; separate parish created 1869 from Woolwich St Mary, abolished 1939. Original registers from 1869.

St Michael & All Angels: Borgard Road built 1875; parish created 1879 from Woolwich St Mary.
