Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 163rd regiment was organized at New York City under Colonel F. H. Braulich and Lieutenant Colonel John Leverich. It was mustered in October 10, 1862, at Washington, D.C. under Lieutenant Colonel John B. Leverick.
The regiment was transferred to 73rd New York Infantry January 20, 1863 under Lieutenant Colonel John B. Leverick . [1][2][3]

The New York State Military Museum website has a unit history project page for the 163rd Infantry Regiment.

The Civil War in the East website gives a timeline for the involvement of 163rd New York Infantry Regiment in the war.

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

See the Regiment Roster, for listing of individuals, their company and their involvement.

The ten companies were principally recruited in New York City, Brooklyn, Kings County and Jamaica, Queens County. The were then consolidated into six companies before they were mustered in at Washington, D.C.
