What is in This Collection?

This collection includes registers of allotments and allotment declarations from the years 1795-1852. It contains pensions or registers of pay allotments to wives and relatives of seamen from 1795-1812 as well as declaration lists of allotments from 1830-1852. The records were filmed at the National Archives of England.

Pension registers may contain the following information:

  • Name of individual in the navy
  • Quality (rank)
  • Name of person receiving allotment (pay)
  • Receiver's relationship to individual in the navy
  • Location and date of marriage
  • Number of sons & daughters
  • Names, ages, and baptism dates of children
  • Residence of person receiving the allotment
  • Amount of allotment
  • Individual's signature or mark
  • Date of allotment
  • Who is paying the allotment

How Do I Search This Collection?

As you are searching this record it is helpful to know such information as your ancestor's name and the approximate time period in which they may have served in the navy. Remember that there may be more than one person in the records with the same name as your ancestor and that your ancestor may have used nicknames or different names at different times in their life. It is also helpful to know the names and residences of close relatives such as the mother, wife, or children of the ancestor you are looking for.

⇒Select the "Date Range" which takes you to the images

Search the collection by image comparing the information you find with what you already know about your ancestors to determine if the image relates to them. You may need to compare several images to make this determination.

Tips to Keep in Mind

  • When looking for a person who had a common name, look at all the entries for the name before deciding which is correct.
  • Continue to search the index and records to identify children, siblings, parents, and other relatives who may have served in the same unit or a nearby unit.
  • Use the allotment receiver's residential county as a starting point for finding other records
  • Use the allotment date with the age of the child to estimate the child's birth date
