The county is named after "Judge John Haywood (1762-1826), called 'the father of Tennessee history.'"

Marriage

Marriages were not officially recorded in Haywood County during the first few years of its existence. In 1838, a law was passed mandating the practice. The following publication, based on early newspapers, helps to alleviate this genealogical obstacle:
