Here is an explanation of the items on this menu:

  • Media - add to reference to media such as a video, but does not seem to be functional at this time (9/19/2016)
  • Template - allows you to insert a template in an article.
  • Table - allows creation of a table.
  • Comment - allows insertion of a comment on the page that only is seen in the coding and does not appear on the saved page.
  • Gallery - allows you to insert an image on a page.
  • Reference list - allows you to place where on the page your references or footnotes will appear.

Click on "More" to see the full list of items on the Insert list.

  Templates

  1. Click on "Edit" in the tool bar at the top of page. The Visual Editor tool bar will now appear.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the template to appear in the article and click. The cursor will remain in that position.
  3. Then click "Insert" on the Visual Editor tool bar.
  4. Select "Template" from the drop down menu and the panel to the left will appear.
  5. When the panel appears, your cursor will appear blinking in the narrow red box.
  6. Enter the name of the template you want to place. (Leave out "Template:" as would be needed in Wikitext coding.)
  7. Click "Add template."
  8. You may be asked to type a description of the template in the next panel.
  9. Then click "Insert"
  10. Then click "Save page" in the Visual Editor tool bar.
  11. Another panel will appear asking for a "Summary" describing briefly what you edits you have made to the page.
  12. Click "Save page" in the panel.
  13. The template should now appear at the location you had originally placed and click with your mouse.

1. Place your cursor where you want the table to appear in the article and click.
2. Click "Insert" on the Visual Editor tool bar.
3. Then select "Table" from the drop down menu and the panel to the left will appear.
4. The cell that is ready for entering data is in blue.
First row of cells

  • The first row of cells will be for columns labels and the text will be in bold black as you make your entries. The rest of the cells will not be in bold lettering.

Second row of cells

  • The following rows of cells will be for your data.

Need more rows

  • If you need more rows, click on the arrow to the side of the row you are working on.

Need more columns

  • If you need more columns, click on the arrow on top the the column you are working on.

Move rows or columns

  • You can also shift the location of rows or columns if needed by clicking on the arrows.
  • Clicking on the row arrow, you have the choice of moving the row up or down in the table.
  • Clicking on the column arrow, you have the choice of moving the column to the right or left in the table.

Merging cells

  • If you want to merge cells, drag your cursor across the cells you want to merge and a panel will appear and then click merge.

Make Sortable or add caption

  • By clicking on "Properties" you can make the table "Sortable" or add a "Caption."

Save your table
4. Click "Save page" on Visual Editor tool bar and another panel will appear asking you to enter in the "Summary" box what you had just entered on the page.
5. Then click "Save page" and table will appear on the page where you had selected.

  • If your table did not appear where you wanted it, you will need to move it with Wikitext.
  • If you now want to delete a table, highlight one of the cells while in the Visual Editor and a panel will appear with the delete key.



  Comment

  1. Click on "Edit" in the tool bar at the top of page. The Visual Editor tool bar will now appear.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the comment to be in the coding in the article and click. The cursor will remain in that position.
  3. Then click "Insert" on the Visual Editor tool bar and click on "More."
  4. Click on "Comment" and a panel will appear as shown to the right.
  5. Type in your comment in the edit box.
  6. Click "Insert" and the comment will be saved.
  7. Then click "Save page" on Visual Editor tool to save the comment to the page.
  8. Enter information in the "Summary" box and click "Save page."
  • While in the Visual Editor, the comment will appear as a small icon in the shape of a small gray circle with a explanation mark in the middle of it. If you put your cursor over the icon the comment will appear as a tooltip.
  • If in Wikitext, the comment can only be seen in "Edit source."

  1. Click on "Edit" in the tool bar at the top of page. The Visual Editor tool bar will now appear.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the image to appear in the article and click. The cursor will remain in that position.
  3. Then click "Insert" on the Visual Editor tool bar.
  4. Select "More" from the drop down menu to see the rest of the menu.
  5. Click on "Gallery" and panel to the right will appear.
  6. In the blue border box enter the link to the image without the square brackets, for example: File:Map of Ireland.jpg.
  7. Click on "Insert." Image will appear where you had placed your cursor on the second step. (However, it will appear by default on left side of page.)
  8. Click "Save page" from Visual editor tool bar.
  9. Enter description in "Summary" box.
  10. Click "Save page" in panel. Image will appear on page.

Limitations

  • Image will only appear on the left side of the article and limited in size.
  • To move image or change size of image you need to edit image in Wikitext which is accessable from "Edit source" on tool bar at top of page.
  • In Wikitext coding delete the <gallery> opening and closing tags.
  • Surround file name with square brackets, for example: [[File:Map of Ireland.jpg]]
  • Then you can add coding to change size or location of image. See lessons 10 and 11 in Wikitext lessons for more instruction
  Reference list

  1. Click on "Edit" in the tool bar at the top of page. The Visual Editor tool bar will now appear.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the list of references or footnotes to appear in the article and click. The cursor will remain in that position.
  3. Then click "Insert" on the Visual Editor tool bar.
  4. Select "More" from the drop down menu to see the rest of the menu.
  5. Click on "References list" and they will appear where you clicked you cursor in a blue box.
  6. Place your cursor on the page where you want the full list of references or footnotes to appear and click.
  7. Next, click on "Reference list" on the drop down menu and the full list of references or footnotes will appear on the page where you clicked your cursor.
  8. Click "Save page" in Visual Editor" tool bar.
  9. Enter description in "Summary" box.
  10. Click "Save page" in panel.
