State Information

Sabah is located on the northern portion of Borneo, East Malaysia. Its nickname is Negeri Di Bawah Bayu (Land Below the Wind). It covers an area of 73,904 km2 (28,534 sq mile). Kota Kinabalu is the state capitol city. Mount Kinabalu[1] is a World Heritage Site, the highest peak in Malaysia, with a height around 4,095 meters.

The head of state is the Governor, also known as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, while the head of government is the Chief Minister.

People from Sabah are generally called Sabahan. There are about 421 ethnic groups with over 200 sub-ethnic groups with their own languages. The three largest indigenous groups are the Kadazan-Dusun[2], Bajau[3], and Murut[4]. [5] Oral genealogy is a common practice more than written genealogy among the indigenous group.
