History[edit | edit source]

Middle Tennessee county.

The county is named after "Duncan Stewart, Tennessee state legislator and lieutenant governor of Mississippi Territory."[4]

Parent County[edit | edit source]

1803--Stewart County was established 1 November 1803 from Montgomery County. County Court first met on 12 March 1804.  Early records may be found under Montgomery County.
County seat: Dover [5]

From 1788 to 1796 people living in what is now part of Stewart County were in extinct Tennessee County. Their records for that period are now found in Robertson County, Tennessee.[6]

County Pronunciation[edit | edit source]

  1. Hear it spoken[7] (female)
  2. Hear it spoken[8] (male)

Record Loss[edit | edit source]

War.jpg
1862 During the American Civil War, 1861-1865, a fire on 25 August damaged records mostly from the Chancery Court, and a few records from the County Court.  Otherwise, the county records are intact.[9]

  • Lost census: 1810
  • Marriage records are lacking from 1804 to 1837; white marriages from 1876 to 1881 are lost.
  • Lost probate records: 1812, 1817-1824
  • Lost Chancery Court records: before 1865

For suggestions about research in places that suffered historic record losses, see:
