Getting Started[edit | edit source]

Let's get to work!

Having reviewed the first four lessons, you should be familiar with:

  • what the Wiki is and it's purpose;
  • what standards are to be followed;
  • what the common links and tabs represent on each page; and
  • how to create your personal pages, especially workarea sandboxes.

You are now ready to begin editing in the Wiki.

Visual Editor or Wikitext Editor?[edit | edit source]

Wiki code can be edited using either Visual Editor or Wikitext Editor.

Visual Editor[edit | edit source]

  • This editor is considered a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor and works like a word processor.
  • It is used to generate wikitext code or HTML code which will affect a page's appearance.
  • You can learn more about using this editor in the Wiki University Visual Editor Tutorial.

Wikitext Editor[edit | edit source]

  • Wikitext, also known as Wikicode, is a hypertext markup editor that consists of SPECIFIC SYNTAX and keywords to format a page.
  • Although this editor is harder to learn, it is considered more robust than Visual Editor; meaning, you can have more varied effects on a page than Visual Editor.

Editing the Wiki[edit | edit source]

This section will focus on "How To Edit" by providing links to step-by-step processes and mini demonstration videos using either of the two editors. (Be advised: You must be logged in before editing the Wiki.)

Add or modify text
  • Edit page
  • Preview page
  • Save page
  • Click "Edit" on the page tab.
  • Highlight the text to be changed and make the change or add new text to where you want it on the page.
  • Link to: How to Preview and Save a page.
  • Click "Edit source" on the page tab.
  • An edit box will appear in which you will see the wikitext coding for the page.
  • Add or modify words, sentences, or other page information.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page to preview and save page:
> Add a short description of your changes in the Summary box.
> To preview your changes, click on the Show preview button.
> To save your changes, click on the Save changes button.
> To cancel out of the page without saving anything, click on the Cancel button, then press Leave.
  • Caution: when the Show preview button is pressed, the top of your page will display a view of the page as it will be seen with your changes saved; the bottom will display the wikitext code. Be sure you save the page, else you will loose all of your changes because Show preview does NOT save the page.

  • Click "Edit source" on the page tab.
  • Place cursor where you want the template, then type: {{templatename}}

Submitting images for upload

1. Be sure your image conforms to the Wiki Image Use Policy.
2. From the Research Wiki sidebar, go to the section entitled Edit the Wiki and click on Upload File/Image.
3. You will be taken to a page named "Email File for Authorization".
4. Fill in the requested information on the form and attach your file then press the "Send file" button.
5. The Wiki Support Team will review your request and provide their response to you.

Request to Change a page name

1. Go to the page or article you want the name changed.
2. Click on the TALK tab for that article and open a new topic entitled: Request page name change.
3. Enter your Reason(s) for requesting the page name change onto the TALK PAGE, then SAVE the page.
4. The Wiki Support Team will review your request and provide their response to you.

Request to Delete a page

1. Go to the page or article you want deleted.
2. Click on the TALK tab for that article and open a new topic entitled: Request to delete page.
3. Enter your reason(s) for requesting that the page be deleted onto the TALK PAGE, then SAVE the page.
4. The Wiki Support Team will review your request and provide their response to you.
