Records and histories of minorities and ethnic groups may provide clues to immigrant origins, migration information and previous residences. See the “Minorities” section of the United States Research Outline (30972) for further sources on ethnic, racial and religious groups.

You can find information on minority groups in most of the same records as other groups. Start your research in the same resources you would search for non-minority groups. The records listed in this section provide information about specific groups in Vermont.

For Vermont, a good source for French-Canadian families in Grand Isle County is:

DeMarce, Virginia Easley. Notebook, French Canadian Settlement in the Champlain Islands, Grand Isle County, Vermont, before the year 1880. Arlington, Virginia: Mrs. James L. DeMarce, 1988. (Family History Library book 974.312 D2d 1988; film 1698074, item4; 1985 edition on FHL microfiche 6126290.) Arranged alphabetically by surname, this book contains genealogies of French-Canadian families in Grand Isle County. It also mentions descendants who lived outside the county.
